Frequently Asked
Garnet Rings FAQ
What exactly is a garnet?
Garnet is not one mineral but a family of related gem minerals, which is why it shows up in so many colours. The red garnets you know best are pyrope and almandine; Rhodolite is a raspberry blend; Spessartite is a mandarin orange; and Tsavorite is a vivid green grossular. Every stone in this collection is a genuine garnet, named by its variety.
Are these engagement rings or fashion rings?
These are fashion rings, made for the right hand, a stack, or a self-purchase rather than a proposal. Wear them however you like. They are distinct from our garnet engagement rings, which live in a separate collection.
Is garnet treated?
Most garnet reaches you exactly as the earth made it. Unlike many coloured stones, garnet is typically not heated, oiled, or otherwise treated to improve its colour, which is a genuine point in its favour. We never overclaim; if a specific stone carried a treatment, we would tell you.
How hard is garnet, and is it durable enough to wear?
Garnet rates roughly 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale depending on the variety. That is durable enough for regular wear, but it is softer than a sapphire (9) or a diamond (10), so it can scratch over time. That is why most of these rings use protective settings, bezel, halo, cluster, or accented styles that shelter the stone.
Which garnet colour should I choose?
It comes down to the colour you love. Mozambique garnet is the classic deep red, Rhodolite is a raspberry purplish-red, Spessartite is a mandarin orange, and Tsavorite is a vivid green that rivals emerald. Each is a real, typically untreated garnet; the price reflects the variety, since green Tsavorite and orange Spessartite are rarer than the red garnets.
How do I care for a garnet ring?
Clean it with warm water, a little mild soap, and a soft brush. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can be too aggressive for a coloured stone. Take the ring off for gardening, the gym, cleaning, and rough work, and have the setting checked once a year. Treated with that ordinary care, a garnet keeps its rich colour for a lifetime.
Does the garnet come with a certificate?
These are calibrated stones, hand-selected for even colour and a clean face, and they ship without an individual lab report. If you would like a certified or hand-picked specimen garnet, our concierge can source and quote one honestly.
Is the price really all-in?
Yes. The price shown is the complete ring: the setting, the garnet center you select, and the labor to set and size it. There is no separate stone charge at checkout.
Is garnet a birthstone?
Yes. Garnet is the birthstone of January, which makes these rings a natural choice for a January birthday as well as an everyday splash of colour.
