Emerald-Cut Swiss Blue Topaz Stud Earrings

An emerald cut — a step cut, with long parallel facets running in from the corners — in 6 x 4 mm Swiss blue topaz. Step cuts do not sparkle the way a brilliant does. They give you long flashes and a clear view straight into the stone, which is why they suit a clean, saturated blue.

Six claw prongs, one at each corner and one on each long side, hold the stone without crowding it. The setting is bare on purpose. Nothing surrounds the stone and nothing is set beside it, so the geometry stays sharp.

About this gemstone. The blue colour of topaz is created by treatment. Each stone here is genuine, mined topaz that has been irradiated and then heat-treated to develop its blue colour — this is how virtually all blue topaz on the market is produced. The colour is permanent and stable in normal wear, and will not fade with ordinary use. “Sky Blue”, “Swiss Blue” and “London Blue” are trade colour descriptions, not separate gem species or geographic origins.

Caring for topaz. Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction and can chip or split from a sharp knock. Do not clean it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner — warm soapy water and a soft brush only.
