Is amethyst hard enough for an engagement ring? Amethyst is purple quartz at 7 on the Mohs scale. That is durable enough for regular wear, but it is softer than a sapphire (9) or a diamond (10), and we say so plainly. This design protects the stone, and we recommend removing the ring for gardening, the gym, cleaning, and rough work.
Natural or lab-grown amethyst? Both are real amethyst, the same mineral at the same 7 Mohs hardness and the same purple. A lab-grown stone is quartz grown in a controlled environment for a cleaner, more even face at an even lower price; a natural stone is earth-mined. Neither is a fake, and you pick the one you prefer above.
Will it fade? Amethyst holds its colour well in everyday wear. Only prolonged, intense heat or years of constant strong sunlight can lighten some amethyst, so simply avoid leaving it baking in the sun or wearing it into a sauna or hot tub, and clean it with warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush.
