Emerald is green beryl at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, softer and more brittle than sapphire, so we build it into protective settings and hand-select every stone. Natural emerald is almost always clarity-enhanced with oil, a standard and accepted practice; a lab-created emerald is true beryl grown in a lab, cleaner and tougher in daily wear. Why does the ring use a protective setting? Emerald is softer and more brittle than sapphire or diamond, and its natural inclusions can make it prone to chipping on an exposed edge. A bezel, halo or accented shoulder shelters the stone, which is why we favor those designs here.
