Five prongs rather than four is a deliberate choice on a stone this size. Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction, and a fifth prong distributes the hold so no single prong carries the stone.

About this gemstone. The blue colour of topaz is created by treatment. Each stone here is genuine, mined topaz that has been irradiated and then heat-treated to develop its blue colour — this is how virtually all blue topaz on the market is produced. The colour is permanent and stable in normal wear, and will not fade with ordinary use. “Sky Blue”, “Swiss Blue” and “London Blue” are trade colour descriptions, not separate gem species or geographic origins.

Caring for topaz. Topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction and can chip or split from a sharp knock. Do not clean it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner — warm soapy water and a soft brush only.
