Blue Topaz/Tanzanite Rings

All three are the same stone, natural topaz, and they differ only in the depth of blue. London Blue is the deepest, an inky, steely blue with a hint of grey. Swiss Blue is the most vivid, a bright, almost electric blue. Sky Blue is the palest, a soft, watery tone close to aquamarine. You choose the blue you love on the product page and we set that stone.

Almost certainly, and we tell you so. Nearly all blue topaz starts as colourless topaz and is irradiated and then heat treated to bring out its blue. The treatment is standard across the whole industry, it is permanent, it does not fade, and the stones are cleared for sale before they reach us. We would rather name the step than imply your topaz is untouched.

It is natural. Blue topaz is real, earth mined topaz that has been treated for colour. There is no lab grown blue topaz on the market, so every stone in this collection is a genuine natural topaz. We do not sell imitation or glass here.

Mystic topaz, sometimes called rainbow topaz, is topaz with a thin metallic coating on the surface that gives it a multicolour sheen. The coating can wear or scratch over time, and it is a different product from the solid blue topaz we sell. We leave it out of this collection so you always know exactly what you are buying: a real, all the way through blue topaz.

Blue topaz is hard, an 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists everyday scratches well. Its one weakness is a perfect cleavage plane, which means a sharp knock in the wrong spot can split or chip it. That is why we build these rings into bezel, halo, channel, cluster and accented settings that shelter the stone. With a little care it will wear beautifully for years.

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are all it needs. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, which can find the cleavage in a brittle stone, and take the ring off for the gym, the garden and heavy chores. Store it apart from harder stones so nothing scratches the surface.

Blue topaz is a colourful, affordable stone that cleaves more easily than a diamond or sapphire, so we build it for cocktail and everyday wear rather than as a bridal center. Wear it however you like.
