A round faceted Mexican fire opal sits at the ear with a 7x5 mm step-cut citrine hanging beneath it - the only warm-toned pair in the collection and the second, reachable way into fire opal. Mexican fire opal is faceted rather than cut as a cabochon, so it behaves like a transparent gem: it takes light through the stone instead of flashing off a dome.

Both stones are natural: AA-quality natural citrine, emerald step-cut, and AA-quality natural Mexican fire opal, round faceted. Opal is a softer, water-sensitive gem at 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Clean with a soft dry cloth, and never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
