Emerald-Cut Blue Topaz Necklace

An 8 x 6 mm emerald-cut London blue topaz, held in a full bezel with a ribbed slide bail above it. The emerald cut is all long parallel steps rather than brilliant facets, so instead of sparkle you get depth — you look into the stone rather than off it.

It is the only step cut in the collection, and the only rectangle: on a grid of rounds, pears and hearts it is the piece that stops the eye. The bezel also matters here, because emerald cuts have four vulnerable corners and this one covers all of them. Blue topaz is colourless natural topaz that has been irradiated and heat-treated to bring out its permanent blue colour — a standard, stable industry treatment. The colour does not fade with normal wear. Topaz has perfect basal cleavage: clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam and sudden temperature change.
