A ring of ten graduated opal cabochons, prong set one after another so the circle reads as stone first and gold second. The centre is left open, which is what keeps a 20 mm pendant light on the neck and lets skin or shirt show through the middle. The cabochons step up in size from 2 mm at the top of the circle round to 4.5 mm at the bottom.
Opal is the birthstone of October and a traditional emblem of hope and imagination, prized for its shifting play-of-color. The circle measures 20.4 by 15.1 mm overall. Set in solid 14K gold or platinum on an adjustable 16 to 18 inch cable chain, 1 mm wide, with a spring ring clasp.

Your Questions
Is there a stone in the middle?
No. The centre of the circle is open. The opals form the ring itself rather than surrounding a centre stone, which is the point of the design and is why the piece stays light.
How many opals are there, and how big?
Ten, in six graduated sizes: one at 2 mm, two at 2.5 mm, two at 3 mm, two at 3.5 mm, two at 4 mm and one at 4.5 mm. They run smallest at the top of the circle to largest at the bottom. All ten are Australian white opal cabochons, A quality, carrying an AGTA enhancement code of Natural.
Do these opals show fire?
These are white opal cabochons and they read as soft, milky and luminous rather than flashing with colour. If you want strong play-of-color, look at our Ethiopian opal pieces instead, which show it much more strongly.
How do I care for it?
Opal is a soft stone (Mohs 5.5 to 6.5) and is sensitive to knocks, heat and dry air. Put it on last and take it off first, store it apart from harder stones, and keep it out of ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
What chain does it come on?
A solid 14K gold or platinum cable chain, 1 mm wide, adjustable to wear at either 16 or 18 inches, with a spring ring clasp. The chain is included in the price.
