Pear Blue Topaz Necklace in an Open Frame

A 5 x 3 mm pear-cut sky blue topaz hangs inside a polished teardrop of solid gold, echoing its shape at a larger scale. The negative space is the design — the frame draws the outline and the stone fills only the centre of it, so the pendant reads much bigger than the stone it carries.

Sky blue topaz is the lighter, clearer end of the topaz family: closer to a summer sky than to deep water. Adjustable 16-to-18-inch cable chain, solid 14K white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum.

Blue topaz is colourless natural topaz that has been irradiated and heat-treated to bring out its permanent blue colour — a standard, stable industry treatment. The colour does not fade with normal wear. Topaz has perfect basal cleavage: clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners, steam and sudden temperature change.
