Each stone is labeled natural or lab-grown on its product page. Rings are made to your size, chosen when you order. Frequently Asked

Birthstone Jewelry FAQ

What is my birthstone?

Each month has at least one traditional birthstone. January is garnet. February is amethyst. March is aquamarine. April is diamond. May is emerald. June has three: pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. July is ruby. August is peridot. September is sapphire. October has opal and tourmaline. November has citrine and topaz. December has blue topaz and tanzanite. When a month has more than one stone, you can choose by color, budget or durability. For example, a June birthday can be marked with a soft pearl for a necklace or a harder alexandrite for a ring. Many of our birthstone pieces name the month and the stone in the title, so you can shop either way.

Are your birthstones natural or lab-grown?

Both appear in this collection, and every product page states which one you are buying. A lab-grown sapphire or emerald is the same mineral as the natural stone, grown in a laboratory rather than formed in the earth. Natural stones carry the appeal of something formed underground, and both are real gemstones. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, chemically and physically the same as mined diamonds. Natural sapphires and rubies are commonly heat-treated, a standard and stable practice. Catalog pieces are sold to a published specification and do not come with an individual grading report. For a question about a particular stone, email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com.

Which birthstones are durable enough for an everyday ring?

Hardness on the Mohs scale is the best guide. Diamond (10), sapphire and ruby (9) and alexandrite (8.5) handle daily ring wear well. Topaz (8) is hard but can cleave from a sharp knock. Aquamarine and emerald are beryl at 7.5 to 8, and emerald is typically oil-treated, so no ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Amethyst (7) can fade in long, strong sunlight. Garnet (6.5 to 7.5), peridot (6.5 to 7) and opal (5.5 to 6.5) need more care, and pearl (2.5 to 4.5) is the softest. If your month falls in the softer group, a birthstone necklace or earrings will keep the stone safer than a ring.

What is a mother's ring?

A mother's ring sets the birthstone of each child, or of each family member, on one ring, so a family is carried in a single piece. Our mother's rings include designs such as a diamond family stackable ring, and stackable birthstone rings let you wear one slim band per child and add more over time. Check each product page for how many stones a design holds and which options it offers. Rings are made to your size, chosen when you order; our sizing guide explains how to measure. If you have a special request, such as a stone combination not listed, email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com before ordering. Custom pieces are final sale.

What is an initial and birthstone necklace?

It pairs a letter with a birthstone on one necklace, so it names a person and marks their month at the same time. Our initial and birthstone necklaces include a gold initial necklace with a birthstone and a diamond initial necklace with a birthstone. They suit a mother wearing her children's initials, a new baby's month, or a birthday gift for someone who likes personal jewelry. Chain length is listed on each piece. Check the product page before checkout to confirm the letter, month and metal you have selected. For a question about letter or stone options, email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com before you order.

Which metal works best with birthstones?

Birthstone jewelry here comes in 14K yellow, white and rose gold and platinum, depending on the design. White gold and platinum keep blue and green stones such as sapphire, aquamarine and emerald looking crisp and cool. Yellow gold warms up garnet, citrine, ruby and peridot. Rose gold flatters pink and purple stones such as amethyst and pink tourmaline, and sits well against warm skin. If the piece will be worn with other jewelry, match the metal she wears most. 14K gold is a durable everyday choice for rings and necklaces, and platinum is naturally white and dense, so it feels heavier on the hand.

Is birthstone jewelry a good gift?

Birthstones are one of the most personal gift ideas in fine jewelry, because the stone is tied to a person's birth month or to a child's. A birthstone necklace is the easiest choice since there is no ring size to guess. Earrings work the same way. Mother's rings and initial and birthstone necklaces suit Mother's Day, a new baby or a milestone birthday. For a ring, borrow one she already wears to confirm the size, or use our sizing guide. Unworn, standard pieces in original condition can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Engraved and custom pieces are final sale, so double-check months and initials before ordering.

How much does birthstone jewelry cost?

Birthstone jewelry starts from $559, and every price shown is complete and all-in, with complimentary, fully insured shipping. Price depends on the stone, its size, whether it is natural or lab-grown, and how many diamonds surround it in a halo or along the band. Necklaces with a single stone sit toward the lower end. Mother's rings with several stones and earrings with diamond halos rise with stone count. Metal matters too: platinum typically costs more than 14K gold for the same design. Where a style is offered with both natural and lab-grown stones, compare the two prices on the product page before deciding.

How long does it take to receive birthstone jewelry?

Most birthstone pieces are made to order and ship in about 5-10 business days. Ready-to-ship pieces leave in 2-3 business days. Each product page shows its own timing, so check it before you order for a birthday or Mother's Day. Every order ships by complimentary, fully insured UPS Express, and a signature is required at delivery. If you need a piece by a specific date, email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com before you order and we will tell you whether that design can arrive in time. Unworn pieces in original condition can be returned within 30 days of delivery, and every piece carries a free lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
