Gemstone Engagement Rings

What are gemstone engagement rings? They are engagement rings with a colored stone or moissanite at the center instead of a diamond. At Diamond & Sapphire the centers include blue, pink and green sapphire, ruby, emerald, alexandrite, aquamarine, amethyst, garnet and moissanite, each labeled natural or lab-grown on its product page. Prices start from $849 and are all-in, including the center stone and accent stones. Metals are 14K and 18K white, yellow and rose gold plus platinum, with 10K white gold on a few designs. Rings are made to your size when you order, most ship in about 5 to 10 business days, and you can also build one in Design Your Ring by choosing a colored gemstone and then a setting.

Frequently Asked

Gemstone Engagement Rings FAQ

Which gemstone is best for an engagement ring?

For a ring worn every day, hardness is the first filter. Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs scale, sapphire and ruby rate 9, and alexandrite rates 8.5, so all four handle daily wear well. Sapphire comes in more than one color here: blue, pink and green. Ruby gives a deep red, and alexandrite is known for changing color between daylight and indoor light. Emerald and aquamarine are beautiful but softer, and amethyst and garnet softer still. After hardness, choose by color, since you will see that stone every day. Then pick the setting and metal that suit it.

Are gemstone engagement rings durable enough for everyday wear?

Some are better suited than others, and the honest answer depends on the stone. Moissanite (9.25), sapphire and ruby (9) and alexandrite (8.5) are hard enough for daily wear with ordinary care. Aquamarine and emerald are beryl at 7.5 to 8. Emerald is typically included and oil-treated, so it should be protected from hard knocks and never cleaned with ultrasonic or steam machines. Amethyst is quartz at 7 and can fade with long, strong sunlight. Garnet sits at 6.5 to 7.5. For softer stones, a halo or bezel setting gives the center more protection than open prongs, and taking the ring off for the gym, gardening or cleaning goes a long way.

What is the difference between natural and lab-grown gemstones?

A natural gemstone formed in the earth and was mined. A lab-grown gemstone was grown in a laboratory. Several stones in this collection, including sapphire, ruby, emerald and alexandrite, are offered in lab-grown versions, and others, such as aquamarine and amethyst, appear as natural stones. Nothing is left to guesswork: every product page labels the center stone as natural or lab-grown, and many product titles say so as well. Read the stone details before you add a ring to your cart if origin matters to you. Pricing is all-in for both, and both are made to your ring size. Questions about a specific stone can go to concierge@diamondandsapphire.com.

Are natural sapphires, rubies and emeralds treated?

Commonly, yes, and the treatments are standard in the trade. Natural sapphires and rubies are commonly heat-treated. Heating is a standard, stable practice; the result does not wear off, and the stone needs no special care because of it. Emeralds are typically included and oil-treated. That oil is why an emerald should never go in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and why warm water with mild soap is the safer way to clean it. The product page tells you whether each center is natural or lab-grown. If you have a question about a particular stone before buying, write to concierge@diamondandsapphire.com.

How much do gemstone engagement rings cost?

Gemstone engagement rings in this collection start from $849. Every price is complete and all-in: it includes the center gemstone, the accent stones around it and the setting, so no separate stone charge is added later. Price changes with the gemstone, its size and origin, the setting style and the metal you select, and the product page shows the price for each option as you choose. Moissanite, sapphire, ruby, emerald, alexandrite and the other centers each have their own collection page if you want to compare within one stone. For a colored stone you choose yourself, Design Your Ring shows the price of each stone and setting pairing before you commit.

Which metal suits a colored center stone?

Metal changes how a colored stone reads. White gold and platinum give a cool, bright frame that keeps blue sapphire, aquamarine and alexandrite looking crisp. Yellow gold warms the setting and pairs naturally with ruby, emerald, garnet and amethyst. Rose gold flatters pink sapphire and other soft tones. Across this collection you can choose 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum, and a few designs are also offered in 10K white gold. 18K holds a higher share of pure gold than 14K, so yellow and rose tones look richer. Options vary by design, so the product page lists exactly which metals each ring offers.

Can I design my own gemstone engagement ring?

Yes. In Design Your Ring you choose a colored gemstone first and then the setting it goes into, which suits buyers who want control over the exact stone. You can also choose a loose diamond, natural or lab-grown, if you decide a diamond center is the better fit after all. Every loose diamond there comes with its own grading report; those reports apply to diamonds, not colored gemstones. The finished ring is made to your ring size. If you have a specific stone or color in mind and cannot find it, the concierge team at concierge@diamondandsapphire.com handles special requests.

How do I choose the right ring size?

Every ring is made to your ring size, which you select when you order. If you do not know the size, our sizing guide will help you work it out. Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their usual size, and not when your hands are cold. For a surprise proposal, borrowing a ring the wearer already wears on the same finger is the most reliable shortcut. Keep in mind that a wide halo or a band with stones across the top can feel a little different from a slim plain band. Getting the size right at the start matters because the ring is made after you order.

How long does a gemstone engagement ring take to arrive?

Most rings are made to order and ship in about 5 to 10 business days. Ready-to-ship pieces leave in 2 to 3 business days. Each product page shows its own timing, so check the listing first if you are planning around a date. Shipping is complimentary, fully insured UPS Express, and a signature is required at delivery, so choose an address where someone can sign. If your date is close, contact concierge@diamondandsapphire.com before ordering so the team can tell you what is realistic for the stone and setting you have in mind.

How do I care for a gemstone engagement ring?

Care depends on the stone. Sapphire, ruby, alexandrite and moissanite clean easily with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Emerald should never go in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner because of its oil treatment, and it deserves protection from knocks. Amethyst can fade with long exposure to strong sunlight, so store it away from a sunny windowsill. Garnet and the beryls are softer than sapphire, so store each ring separately where harder stones cannot scratch it. Take any ring off for heavy work. Our free lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects such as a prong or setting failing under normal wear, though not loss, theft or accidental damage.
