The Aquamarine Jewelry Guide

What aquamarine is

Aquamarine is the blue to greenish blue member of the beryl family, the same mineral species that gives us emerald and morganite. Where emerald is prized for its rich green and accepted with its inclusions, aquamarine is valued for the opposite: crystals so clean that a faceted stone can look like a slice of clear water. The name comes from the Latin for seawater, and old sailors' lore held that it calmed the waves.

Aquamarine, the March birthstone

Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, and GIA lists it for the 19th wedding anniversary. Aquamarine birthstone jewelry is one of the most worn birthstone gifts for a reason: the pale blue goes with everything from denim to evening wear. A pair of studs or a small pendant needs no size and wears every day. See the March birthstone, birthstones by month, or mixed-stone family pieces in birthstone jewelry.

Famous stones and where they come from

Brazil has long been the defining source, especially the state of Minas Gerais, and in 1936 the country presented Eleanor Roosevelt with a 1,298-carat step-cut aquamarine. The Dom Pedro, cut from a single Brazilian crystal and weighing 10,363 carats, is believed to be the largest faceted aquamarine in the world. Fine material also comes from Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Mozambique and Pakistan, and in the United States aquamarine is the state gem of Colorado.

How to judge aquamarine color

Color runs from a whisper of blue to a deeper, slightly greenish blue, and stronger color is worth more. Very pale stones look lovely in larger sizes, where there is more depth for the blue to gather; small stones show their color best when they are on the deeper side. Many aquamarines are gently heated to remove a green tint and leave a purer blue, a routine and stable practice. Every aquamarine in this collection is natural. Two rings pair it with laboratory-grown diamond accents, and their titles say so.

Caring for aquamarine

At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, aquamarine is durable enough for everyday wear, which makes it one of the more practical colored stones for a ring. It is still softer than sapphire or diamond, so store it apart from them. Clean it with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, scrubbing gently behind the stone where dust collects. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually safe as long as the stone has no fractures or liquid inclusions. See our Mohs hardness scale and jewelry cleaning guide.

How to choose aquamarine jewelry

Because aquamarine is pale, setting choices matter more than with darker gems. A diamond halo frames the stone and makes it look larger and bluer; a bezel in white gold or platinum keeps the look cool and modern; yellow gold warms the blue and gives it a vintage softness. For daily rings, aquamarine is one of the few colored gems we recommend without much hesitation. For gifts, the diamond-halo studs and the bezel bar necklaces are the easiest to get right. Rings are made to order in your size, so check the sizing guide first.

Frequently Asked

Aquamarine Jewelry FAQ

What is aquamarine jewelry?

Aquamarine jewelry is any piece set with aquamarine, the blue variety of beryl. Ours sets natural aquamarine in solid 14K white, yellow or rose gold, with platinum on most designs and 18K gold on the engagement rings. The collection covers solitaire, halo and cocktail rings, engagement rings, necklaces, pendants, earrings and a bezel-set cuff.

Is your aquamarine jewelry real?

Yes. Every aquamarine in this collection is natural, mined aquamarine, and each product page states it. Accent stones are listed separately; two rings use laboratory-grown diamond accents, and their titles say so.

Is aquamarine the March birthstone?

Yes. Aquamarine is the March birthstone, and GIA lists it for the 19th wedding anniversary. See the March birthstone for more.

What color aquamarine is the most valuable?

Deeper, more saturated blue is the most valuable, ranging from blue to a slightly greenish blue. Pale stones cost less and look best in larger sizes. Clarity is usually excellent, so color is where to focus.

Is aquamarine treated?

Often, yes. Many aquamarines are heated to remove a green tint and leave a purer blue. The treatment is routine and stable in normal wear. If you would like to know more about a specific stone, ask our concierge.

Can you wear aquamarine every day?

Yes. Aquamarine rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for everyday wear, including rings. Like any gem, it can chip with a hard knock, so a halo or bezel adds protection, and it is wise to remove rings for the gym or heavy work.

Are aquamarine engagement rings a good choice?

They are among the better colored-stone choices. Our aquamarine engagement rings come in halo, three-stone and solitaire designs with round, oval and cushion centers from 1 to 2 carats, in 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold. Expect to have the prongs checked occasionally, as with any ring worn daily.

What does aquamarine symbolize?

Its name means seawater, and sailors once believed it calmed the waves and kept them safe. It was also thought to bring happiness in marriage, which is part of why it is a favorite anniversary and birthday gift.

How do I clean aquamarine jewelry?

Use warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of the stone. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually safe if the stone has no fractures or liquid inclusions. More in our jewelry cleaning guide.

Which metal looks best with aquamarine?

White gold and platinum keep aquamarine cool and icy, the most popular look. Yellow gold warms it and adds a vintage softness; rose gold gives a gentle contrast. Most pieces come in all three colors of 14K gold, and many also in platinum.

What is the difference between aquamarine and blue topaz?

Both are blue and can look alike. Aquamarine is beryl, usually a softer, slightly greenish blue, and its color is natural or gently heated. Most blue topaz starts colorless and is treated to a stronger blue; it is harder at 8 but less tough. Compare in topaz jewelry.

Do you sell aquamarine bracelets?

Yes, one: a bezel-set aquamarine cuff in 14K white, yellow or rose gold, shown in this collection. There are no boxed sets, but many earrings and necklaces share stone shapes and settings, so a matching pair and pendant is easy to put together.

Where does aquamarine come from?

Brazil is the classic source, especially the state of Minas Gerais, with fine stones also mined in Nigeria, Mozambique, Madagascar and Pakistan. Each product page states whether a stone is natural or lab-grown and lists any treatment.

How do I choose the right ring size?

Every aquamarine ring is made to order in the size you select, and rings are final sale, so measure first with our sizing guide. Between sizes, choose the larger one for wider bands.
