The Garnet Jewelry Guide

What garnet is

Garnet is not one mineral but a family of them. The red stones most people picture are pyrope and almandine, and their blends; rhodolite sits between the two with a purplish, raspberry red. The family reaches much further, though: spessartine glows orange, and grossular includes tsavorite, a vivid green that surprises anyone who thinks garnet only comes in wine tones. Most of this collection uses Mozambique garnet, a saturated red with a hint of brown that deepens in candlelight, along with a few rhodolite pieces and a tsavorite necklace. Our garnet guide covers every variety.

Garnet, the January birthstone

Garnet is the birthstone for January and, according to GIA, the gem for the 2nd wedding anniversary. That makes garnet birthstone jewelry an easy gift for a winter birthday or a second year together: a pendant or a pair of studs needs no size and is worn close to the face, where the red reads warm against any skin tone. See the January birthstone for the history, or birthstones by month for the full calendar. Family pieces with several stones live in birthstone jewelry.

A stone with a long memory

The name comes from the medieval Latin granatus, for pomegranate, a fair description of a cluster of small red crystals. Garnet has been worn since the Bronze Age, set in the jewelry of Egyptian pharaohs and cut into Roman signet rings. The Victorians loved it most of all, and the tightly packed red garnets of nineteenth-century Bohemia are still what many people imagine when they hear the word. A garnet ring or necklace today carries a little of that history without asking anyone to wear it as costume.

How to judge garnet color

With garnet, color does nearly all the work. Look for a red that stays lively rather than turning black in low light; a very dark stone can lose its sparkle indoors. Rhodolite trades some depth for brightness and a cooler, berry tone, which suits white gold and platinum. Most garnet is untreated, which is unusual among colored gems, and red garnets are usually clean to the eye, so a clear, bright stone is the norm rather than a premium.

Caring for garnet

Garnet rates 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. That is hard enough for earrings, necklaces and pendants worn often, but softer than ruby, sapphire or diamond, and GIA suggests garnet is best kept for pieces that see less contact than an everyday ring. A garnet ring is lovely for evenings and weekends; take it off for the gym, gardening or cleaning. Wash garnet in warm, soapy water with a soft brush. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe for untreated stones, but steam is not recommended. More in our Mohs hardness scale and jewelry cleaning guide.

How to choose garnet jewelry

Think about where the piece will live. Garnet earrings and pendants are the easiest way to wear the stone daily, from a 4 mm crown stud to a diamond-framed oval drop. For a ring, a halo or bezel shields the edges of the stone; our oval and pear designs carry the most color for the price. Metal changes the mood: yellow and rose gold make garnet look warmer and more vintage, while white gold and platinum sharpen it toward ruby red. Rings are made to order in your size, so measure with the sizing guide first.

Frequently Asked

Garnet Jewelry FAQ

What is garnet jewelry?

Garnet jewelry is any piece set with garnet, a family of related minerals best known in deep red. Ours sets natural garnet in solid 14K white, yellow or rose gold, with platinum on most designs and 18K gold on the engagement rings. It includes solitaire and halo rings, engagement rings, necklaces, pendants, studs, hoops and drops.

Is your garnet jewelry real?

Yes. Every garnet in this collection is natural, and the product page names the variety: Mozambique garnet for most pieces, rhodolite for the raspberry-toned designs and tsavorite for the green necklace. Accent stones are listed separately; one ring pairs garnet with laboratory-grown diamonds, and its title says so.

What color is garnet?

Most people know garnet as red, from wine to brownish red, and that is what most of this collection carries. Rhodolite garnet is a purplish, raspberry red. The garnet family also includes orange spessartine and green tsavorite, so a green stone can be a garnet too.

Is garnet the January birthstone?

Yes. Garnet is the January birthstone, and GIA lists it as the gem for the 2nd wedding anniversary. Garnet birthstone jewelry such as studs or a small pendant is the simplest January gift, since it needs no sizing. See the January birthstone for more.

Is garnet treated?

Most garnet is not treated at all, which sets it apart from many colored gems. Occasionally a stone is fracture filled to improve its clarity; if a treatment applies to a specific piece, its product page says so.

Can you wear a garnet ring every day?

You can, with care, but it is not the stone we would choose for hard daily wear. Garnet rates 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and GIA notes it is more easily damaged than ruby, sapphire or diamond. Pick a halo or bezel setting, remove the ring for heavy work, and have the prongs checked once a year.

Are garnet engagement rings a good choice?

They suit someone who loves deep red and accepts a softer stone than diamond or sapphire. Our garnet engagement rings come in halo, three-stone and solitaire designs with round, oval and cushion centers from 1 to 3 carats, in 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold. If the ring will see constant wear, a ruby offers a similar red at 9 on the Mohs scale.

What does garnet symbolize?

Traditionally, garnet was believed to bring good health, wealth and happiness, and medieval clergy and nobility favored the red stones. Today it is simply a warm, considered gift for January birthdays and second anniversaries. Its name comes from the Latin for pomegranate. Our garnet guide covers the history and lore.

How do I clean garnet jewelry?

Use warm, soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth. Ultrasonic cleaners are usually safe for untreated garnet but not for fractured or filled stones. Avoid steam cleaning. Our jewelry cleaning guide has the full routine.

Which metal looks best with garnet?

Yellow and rose gold bring out garnet's warmth and give it a vintage feel. White gold and platinum cool the red and make diamond accents look brighter. Most of our garnet jewelry is offered in all three colors of 14K gold, and many designs also come in platinum.

What is the difference between garnet and ruby?

They can look alike but are different minerals. Ruby is corundum, rated 9 on the Mohs scale, and its finest color is a pure, vivid red. Garnet is softer at 6.5 to 7.5, often darker or browner in tone, and far more affordable. If you want red for an everyday ring, see ruby jewelry; for earrings and pendants, garnet gives you more stone for the money.

Do you sell garnet bracelets or jewelry sets?

We do not carry garnet bracelets at the moment. There are no boxed sets either, but many garnet earrings and necklaces share a stone shape and setting style, such as the diamond-halo ovals, so a matching pair and pendant is easy to put together.

How do I choose the right ring size?

Every garnet ring is made to order in the size you select, and rings are final sale, so measure first with our sizing guide. If you fall between sizes, choose the larger one for wider bands.
