The Engagement Rings Guide

How to choose an engagement ring

Most people decide in this order: the center stone's shape, the setting style, the stone itself (lab-grown, natural, moissanite or a colored gem), the metal, and finally the carat weight that fits the budget. Every ring on this page is priced with its center stone, so the number you see is the ring you get.

Engagement ring shapes

Round brilliants return the most light and never date. Oval, pear and marquise shapes are elongated, so they look larger per carat and lengthen the finger. Emerald cuts are step cuts with long, mirror-like flashes and a clean Art Deco outline; they show inclusions more readily, so a higher clarity is worth it. Cushion and princess cuts sit between the two: soft-cornered and romantic, or crisp and square.

Setting styles

A solitaire puts all the attention on one stone. A halo rings the center with small diamonds so it reads larger; a hidden halo tucks them under the stone for a cleaner top view. Three-stone rings add side stones, pavé bands carry diamonds down the shoulders, and bezel settings wrap the center in metal, the most protective choice for an active life. For milgrain and scrollwork, see vintage-inspired designs.

Lab-grown or natural diamond

Laboratory-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same hardness and sparkle as mined stones, and they cost far less for the same size, which is why most of our diamond rings are offered with a lab-grown center. Most lab-grown centers are calibrated to F to G color and VS clarity rather than graded one by one, and each product page states the specification. Our diamond clarity chart shows what each clarity grade looks like on real diamonds. If you want an individually graded natural diamond, Design Your Ring lets you choose a GIA-graded stone and pair it with a setting. Prefer something else entirely? Moissanite has more fire than diamond at a fraction of the price, and gemstone engagement rings offer sapphire, ruby, emerald and more.

Metals

Every design comes in 14K yellow, white or rose gold, most also in 18K, and many in platinum. 14K gold is the most durable of the golds for daily wear; 18K has a richer color; platinum is naturally white, dense and hypoallergenic. White gold carries a rhodium finish that a jeweler can refresh every few years.

Budget and carat

An elongated shape or a halo makes a smaller center look larger, and a lab-grown center typically buys a noticeably bigger stone for the same budget. Our engagement rings under $2,000 gather every design that starts below that line, and the diamond size chart shows how each carat weight looks on the hand.

Frequently Asked

Engagement Rings FAQ

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

There is no rule; spend what is comfortable and leaves room for the life you are planning. Our engagement rings start at about $1,000 complete, center included, and most lab-grown diamond designs land between $1,500 and $3,500. A lab-grown center or an elongated shape stretches a budget further than any discount.

Lab-grown or natural: which should I choose?

Both are real diamonds. Laboratory-grown diamonds cost far less for the same size and quality, so they suit buyers who want a larger or whiter stone for the budget. Natural diamonds suit those who value a stone formed in the earth. Every product page states the center type, and Design Your Ring offers GIA-graded natural diamonds.

Which shape looks the biggest for its carat weight?

Elongated shapes. A marquise shows the most surface per carat, followed by pear and oval; emerald cuts look long but show less sparkle. A halo adds visual size to any shape.

Are your engagement rings final sale?

Yes. Every ring we sell is made or sized to your order, and engagement rings are set with the center you choose, so all rings are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged. Please confirm the ring size before ordering; if anything arrives damaged, defective or not as ordered, tell us within 7 days and we will make it right.

How do I find the right ring size for a surprise proposal?

Borrow a ring she wears on her ring finger and measure its inside diameter, or ask a close friend or family member. Our sizing guide converts the measurement to a US size. If you are between sizes, choose the larger.

How long does an engagement ring take to arrive?

Every ring is made to order. Many ship in about 5 to 10 business days and some designs take longer, so check the timing shown on each product page before you buy. If you have a proposal date, order early.

Do the diamonds come with a certificate?

Most lab-grown centers are calibrated to a stated specification, typically F to G color and VS clarity, rather than graded individually; a small number of designs include an IGI report, and the product page says which. To see what clarity grades mean, use our diamond clarity chart. For an individually graded diamond, choose a GIA-graded natural stone through Design Your Ring.

Which metal is best for an engagement ring?

14K gold is the most durable gold for daily wear and the most popular choice; 18K gold has a deeper color; platinum is naturally white, dense and hypoallergenic, and develops a soft patina over time. Match the metal to the wedding band you plan to wear beside it.

Is moissanite a good alternative to diamond?

Moissanite is very hard (9.25 on the Mohs scale), shows more colorful fire than diamond and costs much less. It is not a diamond, and we label it clearly. See our moissanite engagement rings.

Can I choose my own diamond?

Yes. Design Your Ring lets you browse loose diamonds, including GIA-graded natural stones, and pair one with a setting, with the full price shown before you order.

Are gemstones durable enough for an engagement ring?

Sapphire and ruby (9 on the Mohs scale) are excellent for daily wear. Emerald, aquamarine and softer gems need more care and suit protective settings such as a halo or bezel. Each gemstone ring's page notes its origin, natural or lab-grown.

How is my ring shipped?

Every order ships free and fully insured, and engagement rings, all of which are over $500, ship by UPS Express with a signature required on delivery. Full details are on our shipping and returns page.
