10K Scrap Gold Price: What Buyers and Pawn Shops Pay
A refiner or gold buyer pays for gold content only. Fair offers typically run 60% to 95% of melt value[2], which puts 10K scrap at about $32.87 to $52.04 per gram ($51.11 to $80.93 per pennyweight) as of November 5, 2026. Pawn shops and jewelers who buy to resell usually offer less, because they carry the cost and risk of the resale.
- Know your melt value before you ask for offers: weight in grams × $54.78.
- Ask each buyer for their price per gram and the weight they measured, and get several quotes[2].
- Separate pieces by karat: a buyer who weighs 10K and 14K together may pay the lower rate for all of it.
- Pieces with natural diamonds, signed makers or fine workmanship can be worth more than scrap; value them before you melt them with the scrap gold calculator.
What Is 10K Gold?
10K gold is 41.7% gold and 58.3% other metals, usually silver, copper and zinc (white 10K adds nickel or palladium). The extra alloy makes it harder and more scratch-resistant than 14K or 18K, and it costs the least of the three, so it is a common choice for class rings, men's bands and everyday chains. The trade-offs: a paler yellow color, and more base metal against the skin, which matters for people sensitive to nickel.
A new 10K piece sells for more than its melt value because its price also covers design, casting or chain-making, setting and polishing, any stones, and the cost of selling it. A scrap buyer pays for none of that, which is why the same piece is worth far less as scrap. If you are shopping rather than selling, browse our 10K gold wedding bands, 10K gold chains and men's 10K gold bands, each made to order in solid gold.
How to Tell If Gold Is 10K
- Look for the stamp. Solid 10K gold is usually marked 10K, 10KT or 417, inside a ring band or near a clasp. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, solid gold should be described by its karat.[3]
- Know the legal tolerance. Under US law, gold marked 10K may test no more than 3 parts per thousand below its marked fineness (at least 41.4% for a 41.67% mark), or 7 parts per thousand when the whole article, solder included, is tested.[4]
- Spot gold that is not solid. Marks such as GF (gold filled), GP or GEP (gold plated), HGE (heavy gold electroplate) and vermeil (gold over sterling silver) mean a thin layer of gold over another metal, worth far less than solid 10K. In the US, that layer must itself be at least 10 karat.[3]
- Test before you sell. A jeweler or buyer can confirm karat in minutes with an acid test or an XRF analyzer; ask them to test in front of you.
Why 41.7%? Ten parts of 24 is 41.67%, and 10K alloys are made to the 417 standard, which is why many 10K pieces are stamped 417. See what other jewelry stamps mean.
How We Calculate the 10K Gold Price
Formula: 10K price per gram = gold spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 grams × 0.417. Per pennyweight multiplies the gram price by 1.55517; per troy ounce by 31.1035; per kilogram by 1,000. Every figure is computed from the displayed spot price and rounded once, to the cent (half up); daily changes are the difference between the displayed prices.
Source and timing: the gold spot price comes from metals.dev[1], captured once each US trading day in the late afternoon, Eastern time (after the US settlement); the latest capture was November 5, 2026, 6:56 p.m. ET. Spot is an indicative mid-market price for pure gold, and each day's figure is a daily snapshot, not an official exchange settlement price. On weekends and US market holidays (NYSE/COMEX closures) the page is not updated and keeps the last trading day's price and date. Earlier days in the 30-day chart come from the provider's daily historical series.
Scrap range: 60% to 95% of melt value, the published fair range for scrap offers[2]. Actual offers depend on the buyer, the quantity and the day.
