The essential pearl: 4 mm cultured Akoya studs in 14K gold.
Pearl Jewelry for a 30th Anniversary
Pearl is the traditional 30th anniversary gift, and cultured pearls are the 30th anniversary gemstone, so pearl jewelry is the natural choice for thirty years. Akoya pearls are known for round shapes and bright luster; freshwater pearls for a softer glow. Below are 9 pearl pieces in four budgets, all cultured pearls.
There is no single authoritative anniversary list, but pearl for the 30th appears on both the traditional and gemstone lists.
Pearl anniversary gifts, by budget
Every pearl here is cultured: grown in a mollusk with a little human help, which is how nearly all pearls are produced today. Studs and pendants are the easiest gifts; a strand is the traditional one.

Akoya vs freshwater pearls
Akoya pearls, cultured mainly in Japan and China, are prized for their round shapes and mirror-bright luster. Freshwater pearls are cultured in lakes and rivers, come in a wider range of shapes, and have a softer glow at a gentler price. Both are real, cultured pearls. Learn more in our pearl guide.
Caring for pearls
Pearls are soft, about 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, and sensitive to chemicals. Put them on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray, and wipe them with a soft, damp cloth after wearing. Store them apart from harder jewelry so they do not scratch. Pearl rings are best kept for occasional wear.
A 30th wedding anniversary gift for your wife
If she already owns pearl studs, a strand or a pendant is the natural next piece; if she owns a strand, studs or a pearl-and-diamond earring complete the set. More pearls are in our pearl necklaces and pearl earrings, and the anniversary gifts by year chart covers every other year.

30th anniversary pearl jewelry: questions
What is the 30th anniversary gift?
Pearl. It is the traditional US gift for the 30th anniversary, and cultured pearls are the 30th anniversary gemstone on the list GIA publishes.
Are the pearls real?
Yes. They are cultured pearls, grown inside a mollusk around a bead or tissue placed by a pearl farmer. Nearly all pearls sold today are cultured.
Akoya or freshwater pearls for a 30th anniversary?
Akoya pearls are rounder and more lustrous, the classic choice for a strand or studs. Freshwater pearls have a softer glow and more varied shapes at a gentler price. Either is a real pearl.
How do I care for pearl jewelry?
Put pearls on last and take them off first, keep them away from perfume and cleaning products, wipe them with a soft damp cloth, and store them separately from harder jewelry.
Are pearls durable enough for every day?
Pearl studs and pendants wear well with a little care. Pearls are soft, about 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, so rings and bracelets that knock against surfaces are better for occasional wear.
