The pearl is a cultured white Akoya, not a natural pearl; Akoya of this class is routinely bleached to even its colour, which is standard and permanent. Pearl is soft at 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so put these on after perfume and hairspray and wipe them with a soft cloth after wear. Tourmaline is the October birthstone and a durable 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. Most tourmaline reaching the trade is untreated, though some material is heated or irradiated to improve colour, a stable and permanent process, and included material is sometimes clarity-enhanced. No origin or laboratory report is implied. Tourmaline is brittle and heat sensitive, so clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
