Emerald-Cut Natural Peridot J-Hoop Earrings (7x5 mm)

The largest peridot in the collection: a 7 x 5 mm emerald-cut stone, step-faceted and set in a clean bezel that follows the octagon exactly, carried on a short J-hoop with a post and friction back. Stuller's own description calls this a bezel-set solitaire and never mentions the hoop, but the J-hoop is plainly there in the photographs, so that is what we describe. The published 11.4 x 8.6 mm is the bezel head, not the hoop tail. Step cuts trade sparkle for depth of colour, and on peridot that trade is worth making — you see straight into the stone. The hoop is narrow and unset, so nothing competes with the stone. There are no diamonds here; the only ornament is a pierced openwork gallery under the bezel, which you see from the side. The money in this pair is in the peridot and the metal rather than in accent stones, which is why it carries the price it does. A gift that means something. A milestone August birthday, an anniversary, or a serious coloured-stone pair for someone who already has the diamonds. Peridot is doubly refractive; in a step cut of this size the doubled facet edges are visible and normal for the species.

Caring for peridot. Peridot is Mohs 6.5–7 and is sensitive to sudden temperature change and to acids, including some household cleaners.
