Peridot Cabochon Necklace

Every other peridot in this collection is faceted. This one is not. An 8 x 6 mm oval cabochon - domed, unfaceted, polished smooth - reads as a pool of colour rather than a scatter of sparkle, and it is the largest peridot here at roughly 1.2 to 1.4 carats.

A cabochon is the oldest way to finish a gemstone and still the most flattering to peridot specifically. Faceting chases brilliance; a dome pushes forward saturation, and saturation is what peridot has.

The full bezel is the most protective mount available, which matters for a stone with distinct cleavage worn at the neck. The result is quiet, tactile and unmistakably not a diamond substitute.

Natural peridot, untreated - peridot is one of the few gemstones that is essentially never enhanced. Peridot is 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale with distinct cleavage and is sensitive to thermal shock and acids. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush only - never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Store separately so harder stones cannot scratch it.
