Peridot Evil Eye Necklace with White Sapphire

The evil eye is one of the oldest protective motifs in jewellery, and this is the version that earns a place on a fine-jewellery neck rather than a holiday stall. A 3.5 mm round natural peridot sits bezel-set as the iris, its yellow-green reading clean and warm against a surround of pave-set natural white sapphires.

The pendant lies horizontally along the chain rather than hanging from a bail, so it sits flat at the base of the throat and layers well under a longer piece. At 15.2 x 8.1 mm it is legible without being loud.

The bezel is the point: peridot has distinct cleavage and prefers a rim of solid gold around its girdle to a set of exposed prongs. This is the setting a gemologist would choose for a stone worn every day.

Natural peridot, untreated - peridot is one of the few gemstones that is essentially never enhanced. Peridot is 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale with distinct cleavage and is sensitive to thermal shock and acids. Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush only - never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Store separately so harder stones cannot scratch it.
