White Sapphire Earrings, Evil Eye

An evil-eye motif drawn entirely in white sapphire: eighteen small stones trace the outline of the eye on each earring, with a 2 mm sapphire bezel-set as the pupil. Thirty-eight stones across the pair, and not a diamond among them. Each earring is 11.6 x 5.9 mm and stands 2.47 mm off the lobe, so the shape is legible without being large. Friction post and back. The evil eye is a talisman believed to guard against bad luck, which is what makes it a common gift at a new job or a move. Natural corundum, graded AA and colorless. Hardness of 9 puts it directly below diamond, which is why it suits pieces worn daily. The stone may have been heat treated for color and clarity, which is standard and does not reverse. Soap, warm water and a soft brush; nothing stronger is needed. The photograph shows one pair; natural stones vary slightly from it.
