Frequently Asked

Rings for Women FAQ

How do I choose between diamond, gemstone, stackable and cocktail rings?

Think about how the ring will be worn. A diamond ring is the most durable choice for a piece you never take off. Sapphire rings and other gemstone rings bring color, and the stone can mark a birth month or a meaningful date. Stackable rings are slim bands meant to be combined, so you can start with one and add more over time. Cocktail rings carry a larger center stone and are made to be noticed, which suits evenings and the right hand. Toi et moi rings set two stones together and read as personal. If you want a single everyday ring, choose diamond or sapphire in the metal you wear most, then add stacking bands later.

Are the stones in your rings real?

Yes. Every diamond and gemstone is a real stone, and each product page labels it natural or lab-grown. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, chemically and physically the same as mined diamonds, grown in a laboratory rather than formed underground. Colored stones are labeled the same way, so a lab-grown alexandrite or a natural amethyst is named as such in the title or specifications. Catalog rings are sold to a published specification and do not come with an individual grading report. If you want a loose diamond with its own grading report, Design Your Ring lets you choose one, natural with a GIA report or lab-grown with an IGI, GCAL or GIA report, and then pick a setting.

Which gemstone is best for a ring I will wear every day?

Rings take more knocks than any other jewelry, so hardness matters. Diamond is the hardest at 10 on the Mohs scale. Sapphire and ruby follow at 9; natural ones are commonly heat-treated, a standard and stable practice. Alexandrite rates 8.5 and topaz 8, though topaz can cleave from a hard knock. Emerald, morganite and aquamarine are beryl at 7.5 to 8, and emerald is typically included and oil-treated, so it needs gentler handling. Amethyst sits at 7 and can fade with long, strong sunlight. For a daily ring, diamond, sapphire or ruby is the practical choice. Softer stones are better saved for rings you rotate or wear for occasions.

Which metal should I choose for a ring?

Rings in this collection come in 14K white, yellow and rose gold, 18K white, yellow and rose gold, platinum, and 10K white gold on a few designs, with options shown on each product page. Yellow gold reads warm, white gold and platinum read cool and make white diamonds appear brighter, and rose gold flatters warm skin and pink or peach stones. 14K is a durable everyday choice. 18K contains more pure gold and shows richer color. Platinum is naturally white and dense, so it feels heavier on the hand. If you plan to stack rings, matching metals give a cleaner look, though mixing yellow and white gold is common and easy to wear.

How do I get the right ring size?

Every ring is made to your ring size, which you choose when you order. If you do not know your size, our sizing guide explains how to measure at home, and a local jeweler can size your finger in a few minutes. Fingers swell with heat and shrink with cold, so measure at the end of the day at a normal temperature, and size the knuckle as well as the base if your knuckles are larger. Wider bands can feel tighter than narrow bands in the same size. If you are buying a surprise, borrow a ring she already wears on the same finger and have it measured. Email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com with any sizing question before you order.

What is a toi et moi ring?

Toi et moi is French for "you and me." The design sets two stones side by side or slightly offset, one for each person, on a single band. The two stones can match in shape and type, or contrast, such as a diamond beside a colored gemstone, or two different shapes. Our toi et moi rings include pavé diamond designs that add small diamonds along the band. The style works as a right-hand ring, an anniversary ring or a less traditional engagement ring. As with any gemstone ring, check the hardness of each stone if you plan to wear it every day; diamond and sapphire hold up best.

What is the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring?

A promise ring marks a commitment before engagement, or simply a promise between two people, and it is usually smaller and simpler than an engagement ring. Promise rings in this collection include designs such as a diamond heart band, and they can be worn on any finger. An engagement ring usually carries a larger center stone and is worn on the left ring finger. When you are ready for that step, browse diamond engagement rings or use Design Your Ring to choose a loose diamond or colored gemstone and then a setting. Matching wedding bands come later and sit beside the engagement ring.

How much do rings for women cost?

Rings start from $229, and every price shown is complete and all-in. For gemstone rings, the price includes the center stone and the accent stones, so nothing is added at checkout for stones. Plain stacking bands sit at the entry end of the range. Price rises with stone size and with how many diamonds surround it in a halo or along the band. Natural and lab-grown stones are priced differently, so compare both where a design offers both. Metal also matters: 18K gold and platinum typically cost more than 14K for the same ring. Shipping is complimentary and fully insured, with a signature required at delivery.

How long does it take to receive a ring?

Most rings are made to order in your size and ship in about 5-10 business days. Ready-to-ship pieces leave in 2-3 business days. Each product page shows its own timing, so check it before ordering if you have a date in mind, such as a birthday, anniversary or proposal. Every order ships by complimentary, fully insured UPS Express, with a signature required at delivery. If you need a ring by a specific day, email concierge@diamondandsapphire.com before you order and we will tell you whether that ring can arrive in time. Unworn rings in original condition can be returned within 30 days of delivery; engraved and custom pieces are final sale.

How do I care for my ring?

Take rings off for the gym, gardening, cleaning and anything that involves hard knocks or chemicals. Clean diamond, sapphire and ruby rings with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, working under the stone where lotion collects. Emerald is typically oil-treated, so never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners on it. Keep topaz away from hard knocks, as it can cleave, and keep amethyst out of long, strong sunlight to protect its color. Store rings separately, because diamond will scratch softer stones and gold. Check prongs from time to time. Our free lifetime warranty covers manufacturing defects such as prongs or settings failing under normal wear, but not loss, theft or accidental damage.
