Platinum Scrap Price: What Buyers Pay

A refiner or precious-metals buyer pays for metal content only. Fair offers typically run 60% to 95% of melt value[2], which puts platinum 950 scrap at about $27.70 to $43.86 per gram ($43.08 to $68.21 per pennyweight) as of November 5, 2026. Pawn shops and jewelers who buy to resell usually offer less, because they carry the cost and risk of the resale.

  • Know your melt value before you ask for offers: weight in grams × $46.17 for platinum 950.
  • Ask each buyer for their price per gram and the weight they measured, and get several quotes[2].
  • Remove stones and non-metal parts where you can; buyers weigh everything and pay only for the metal.

Platinum vs Gold Price

No, not at the moment. As of November 5, 2026, platinum trades at $1,511.60 per troy ounce and gold at $4,085.93, so an ounce of platinum is worth about 37% of an ounce of gold. With gold at $4,085.93, platinum is worth about 37% of the price of gold by weight.

Price per ounce is only part of what a ring costs. Platinum jewelry is 95% pure (14K gold is 58.5% gold), and platinum is denser: about 21.45 grams per cubic centimeter, against about 19.3 for pure gold[4][5]. So the same ring holds more grams of precious metal in platinum, and platinum takes more time and skill to cast and polish. That is why platinum rings usually cost more than 14K or 18K gold rings, even on days when platinum trades below gold. Deciding between metals? Compare white gold vs platinum. Platinum Stamps: PT950, 900Pt and PLAT

  • PT950, 950 PLAT or PLAT: at least 95% platinum. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, only metal of at least 950 parts per thousand may be described simply as "platinum."[3]
  • 900Pt or 850Pt: 90% or 85% platinum; the number must come with the word or abbreviation.[3]
  • Less than 850: must disclose that the alloy may not have the same properties as traditional platinum, for example "585 Pt., 415 Co."[3]
  • Test before you sell. A jeweler or refiner can confirm platinum content with an XRF analyzer in minutes.

How We Calculate the Platinum Price Per Gram

Formula: price per gram = platinum spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 grams × purity (pure platinum 100% (spot), platinum 950 95%, platinum 900 90%). Per pennyweight multiplies the gram price by 1.55517; per troy ounce by 31.1035; per kilogram by 1,000. Every figure is computed from the displayed spot price and rounded once, to the cent (half up); daily changes are the difference between the displayed prices.

Source and timing: the platinum spot price comes from metals.dev[1], captured once each US trading day in the late afternoon, Eastern time (after the US settlement); the latest capture was November 5, 2026, 6:56 p.m. ET. Spot is an indicative mid-market price for pure platinum, and each day's figure is a daily snapshot, not an official exchange settlement price. On weekends and US market holidays (NYSE/COMEX closures) the page is not updated and keeps the last trading day's price and date. Earlier days in the 30-day chart come from the provider's daily historical series.

Scrap range: 60% to 95% of melt value, the published fair range for scrap offers[2]. Actual offers depend on the buyer, the quantity and the day.

Platinum Price FAQ

What is the platinum price per gram today?

Pure platinum is worth $48.60 per gram as of November 5, 2026, 6:56 p.m. ET, based on a platinum spot price of $1,511.60 per troy ounce. Platinum 950, the usual jewelry alloy in the US, is worth $46.17 per gram in melt value.

How much is platinum worth per ounce?

A troy ounce of pure platinum (31.1035 grams) is worth $1,511.60 at the spot price as of November 5, 2026. A troy ounce of platinum 950 holds $1,436.02 of platinum.

Is platinum more expensive than gold?

No, not at the moment. As of November 5, 2026, platinum trades at $1,511.60 per troy ounce and gold at $4,085.93, so an ounce of platinum is worth about 37% of an ounce of gold. A platinum ring still usually costs more than the same ring in 14K gold, because platinum jewelry is 95% pure and platinum is denser, so the ring holds more precious metal, and it is harder to work.

How much is a platinum ring worth?

Its metal is worth its weight in grams times $46.17 for platinum 950 as of November 5, 2026: a 5-gram band holds about $230.85 of platinum and a 10-gram band about $461.69. Weigh the ring to know for sure. A natural diamond or a known maker can add value beyond the metal.

What is the scrap price of platinum?

A fair scrap offer for platinum 950 runs about $27.70 to $43.86 per gram as of November 5, 2026: 60% to 95% of its $46.17 melt value. Refiners pay for the platinum content only; ask for the per-gram price and the weight they measured.

What does PT950 or PLAT mean?

PT950, 950 PLAT or PLAT means the piece is at least 95% platinum. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, only metal of at least 950 parts per thousand may be called just "platinum"; 900 or 850 platinum must show its number, as in 900Pt, and alloys with less than 850 must disclose that they may not have the properties of traditional platinum.

Why is platinum jewelry so heavy?

Platinum is one of the densest metals used in jewelry: about 21.45 grams per cubic centimeter, compared with about 19.3 for pure gold and much less for 14K gold. The same ring weighs noticeably more in platinum, which is part of why it costs more.

Does platinum tarnish?

No. Platinum does not tarnish or need rhodium plating to stay white. With wear it develops a soft gray sheen called a patina, which a jeweler can polish away; some people prefer the patina.

Is platinum better than white gold for an engagement ring?

Platinum is naturally white, hypoallergenic for most people and holds stones securely as it wears; white gold costs less and is plated with rhodium, which needs renewing every few years. Both are excellent choices; the right one depends on budget and how much upkeep you want.

How often is the platinum price on this page updated?

Every US trading day, in the late afternoon Eastern time (after the US settlement). On weekends and US market holidays (NYSE/COMEX closures) the page is not updated, so it shows the last trading day's price and its date.
