Silver Scrap Price: What Buyers Pay
A refiner or precious-metals buyer pays for metal content only. Fair offers typically run 60% to 95% of melt value[2], which puts sterling silver scrap at about $0.92 to $1.46 per gram ($1.43 to $2.27 per pennyweight) as of November 5, 2026. Pawn shops and jewelers who buy to resell usually offer less, because they carry the cost and risk of the resale.
- Know your melt value before you ask for offers: weight in grams × $1.54 for sterling silver.
- Ask each buyer for their price per gram and the weight they measured, and get several quotes[2].
- Remove stones and non-metal parts where you can; buyers weigh everything and pay only for the metal.
Fine, Sterling and Coin Silver: How to Tell
- Fine silver (999): 99.9% silver, used for bullion bars and coins. Too soft for most jewelry.
- Sterling silver (925): at least 92.5% silver, usually with copper, stamped 925, Sterling or Ster. In the US, "sterling" may only be used at that minimum.[3]
- Coin silver (900): at least 90% silver, found in older US coins and some antique silverware.[3]
- Silver-plated: marks such as EP, EPNS or "silver plate" mean a thin silver layer over base metal, with almost no scrap value.
Tarnish does not reduce silver's metal value: it is a thin surface layer that polishes off. For context, gold is worth about 79.0 times as much as silver per ounce today.
How We Calculate the Silver Price Per Gram
Formula: price per gram = silver spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 grams × purity (fine silver 100% (spot), 999 silver 99.9%, sterling 92.5%). Per pennyweight multiplies the gram price by 1.55517; per troy ounce by 31.1035; per kilogram by 1,000. Every figure is computed from the displayed spot price and rounded once, to the cent (half up); daily changes are the difference between the displayed prices.
Source and timing: the silver spot price comes from metals.dev[1], captured once each US trading day in the late afternoon, Eastern time (after the US settlement); the latest capture was November 5, 2026, 6:56 p.m. ET. Spot is an indicative mid-market price for pure silver, and each day's figure is a daily snapshot, not an official exchange settlement price. On weekends and US market holidays (NYSE/COMEX closures) the page is not updated and keeps the last trading day's price and date. Earlier days in the 30-day chart come from the provider's daily historical series.
Scrap range: 60% to 95% of melt value, the published fair range for scrap offers[2]. Actual offers depend on the buyer, the quantity and the day.

Is silver-plated jewelry worth anything?
Very little as metal. Silver-plated pieces (often marked EP, EPNS or "silver plate") carry only a microscopically thin layer of silver over a base metal, so scrap buyers usually pay nothing for the silver. Look for a 925, Sterling or 999 stamp before valuing a piece as solid silver.
What is the difference between fine silver, sterling and coin silver?
Fine silver is 99.9% silver (stamped 999). Sterling is at least 92.5% silver (925) and is the standard for jewelry and flatware because pure silver is too soft. Coin silver is at least 90% silver (900), used in older US coins and some antique silverware. In the US, "sterling" and "coin silver" can only be used at those minimums.
What is the gold-to-silver ratio today?
As of November 5, 2026, one troy ounce of gold ($4,085.93) buys about 79.0 troy ounces of silver ($51.71). The ratio shows how many ounces of silver equal one ounce of gold, and it moves every day with both prices.
How often is the silver price on this page updated?
