The warmest thing we make in opal. A faceted 7 by 5 mm Mexican fire opal burns orange at the centre, ringed by eleven golden citrine cabochons that step the colour down from red to honey. There is no diamond anywhere on it and it does not need any.

Opal is the birthstone of October and a traditional emblem of hope and imagination. Mexican fire opal takes its colour from iron rather than from play-of-color, which is why it reads as a solid warm orange. Set in solid 14K gold or platinum on an adjustable 16 to 18 inch cable chain with a lobster clasp.

A gift note. For someone whose whole wardrobe is warm, or who is tired of being given pale stones. It changes the colour of an outfit rather than sitting quietly against it.

Answers, before you ask

Your Questions

Is the centre stone a cabochon?

No. The Mexican fire opal centre is faceted, 7 by 5 mm oval. The eleven citrine accents ringing it are the cabochons. Our supplier's bill of materials lists eleven round cabochon natural citrines, AA quality, and one faceted Mexican fire opal.

Are there any diamonds?

None. Our supplier publishes no diamond weight for this piece. The surround is natural citrine and nothing else.

Why does it not flash like the other opals?

Mexican fire opal gets its colour from iron oxide in the silica rather than from the internal structure that produces play-of-color, so it shows a steady orange body rather than shifting flashes. That is normal for the varietal, not a fault.

How do I care for it?

Mexican fire opal has a high water content and is prone to crazing, so avoid heat, dry air and sudden changes of temperature. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Opal is a soft stone (Mohs 5.5 to 6.5) and is sensitive to knocks, heat and dry air. Put it on last and take it off first, store it away from harder stones, and keep it out of ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
