The Citrine Jewelry Guide

What citrine is

Citrine is the yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz, a close relative of amethyst. Its name is believed to come from the French citron, for lemon, though the color runs well beyond pale yellow into honey, marigold and a deep amber sometimes called Madeira. For centuries it was confused with topaz and sold under that name, which is one reason both stones share November. Citrine set in gold has been worn since Roman times and was a favorite in Victorian Scottish jewelry. Our citrine guide tells the full story.

Citrine, a November birthstone

Citrine shares November with topaz, and GIA lists it for the 13th wedding anniversary. Its golden tone suits autumn birthdays, and because it is affordable in generous sizes, citrine birthstone jewelry can feel more lavish than the price suggests. A pendant or a pair of studs needs no sizing. Read about the November birthstones, browse birthstones by month, or find family pieces in birthstone jewelry.

Where the golden color comes from

Natural citrine that has never been heated is uncommon; the Anahí mine in Bolivia is one of the best-known sources. According to GIA, most citrine on the market today begins as amethyst, largely from Brazil, that is heated until its purple turns gold. Both are genuine quartz, and the heated color is stable in normal wear. Every citrine in this collection is natural, mined quartz; if you want to know more about a particular stone, our concierge can tell you what we know.

How to judge citrine color

The most sought-after citrine is a saturated yellow to reddish orange without brownish tints. Paler lemon stones look fresh and modern, especially in white gold; deeper amber and Madeira tones look rich in yellow and rose gold. Citrine is usually clean to the eye, so let color and cut lead your choice, and look for a stone that stays lively rather than turning brown in low light.

Caring for citrine

Citrine rates 7 on the Mohs scale and has good toughness, so it handles regular wear in rings, earrings and pendants. It is still softer than sapphire or diamond, so store it separately. Warm, soapy water and a soft brush are always safe. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine, but avoid steam, because high heat can crack quartz. Our Mohs hardness scale and jewelry cleaning guide explain more.

How to choose citrine jewelry

Citrine is one of the few gems where size is not a budget question, so it is worth choosing the look you love rather than the smallest stone. A bold cocktail or channel-set ring makes the most of its warmth; delicate bars, hearts and crosses suit layering. Rose gold deepens the orange, yellow gold makes the whole piece glow, and white gold or platinum gives citrine a brighter, more contemporary edge. Rings are made to order in your size, so check the sizing guide before ordering.

Frequently Asked

Citrine Jewelry FAQ

What is citrine jewelry?

Citrine jewelry is any piece set with citrine, the golden variety of quartz. Ours sets natural citrine in solid 14K white, yellow or rose gold, with platinum on most designs. The collection includes cocktail, halo and stackable rings, solitaire and bar necklaces, pendants, studs and hoops.

Is your citrine jewelry real?

Yes. Every citrine in this collection is natural, mined quartz, and each product page states it. We do not use glass or imitation citrine. A few pieces pair citrine with another gem, such as a pink tourmaline accent or a fire opal center, and the product page names both.

Is citrine heat treated?

Most citrine on the market is. GIA notes that most of today's citrine is amethyst that has been heated to a golden color; it is still natural quartz, and the color is stable. Unheated citrine exists, notably from Bolivia, but it is less common. Ask our concierge about a specific stone.

Is citrine a November birthstone?

Yes. Citrine and topaz are both November birthstones, and GIA lists citrine for the 13th wedding anniversary. See the November birthstones for more.

What color citrine is the most valuable?

Saturated yellow to reddish orange with no brownish tint is the most prized. Deep orange-brown stones are often called Madeira citrine. Lighter lemon citrine costs less and has a fresh, modern look.

Can you wear citrine every day?

Yes. At 7 on the Mohs scale with good toughness, citrine handles everyday wear in earrings, pendants and rings. Remove rings for the gym or heavy work, and avoid knocking the stone against hard surfaces.

What does citrine symbolize?

Citrine's sunny color has long been tied to warmth and optimism, and it was once believed to soothe tempers, a belief it shared with topaz. Today it is a cheerful gift for November birthdays and 13th anniversaries. Read more in our citrine guide.

How do I clean citrine jewelry?

Use warm, soapy water and a soft brush, then rinse and dry. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually safe; skip steam cleaning, because high heat can crack the stone. See our jewelry cleaning guide.

Which metal looks best with citrine?

Yellow gold makes citrine glow and is the classic pairing; rose gold deepens its orange; white gold and platinum give a brighter, modern contrast. Most pieces come in all three colors of 14K gold, and most also in platinum.

Is citrine the same as yellow topaz?

No. Citrine is quartz, rated 7 on the Mohs scale; topaz is a different mineral rated 8. The two were confused for centuries, which is why both are associated with November. Our topaz collection is blue; see topaz jewelry.

Do you sell citrine engagement rings or bracelets?

Not at the moment. Our citrine rings are fashion and cocktail designs rather than bridal settings, and we do not carry citrine bracelets. Many citrine earrings and necklaces share stone shapes, so a matching pair and pendant is easy to put together.

How do I choose the right ring size?

Every citrine ring is made to order in the size you select, and rings are final sale, so measure first with our sizing guide. Between sizes, choose the larger one for wider bands.
